A friend in need…

Bulgarian supporters help House of Opportunity resident Natalie get back on her feet.

Almost a year ago, one of the girls in our House of Opportunity programme in Sofia was diagnosed with a tumour forming on her femur, near the knee. The tumour itself was benign, but Natalie’s mobility was severely affected and there was a very serious risk that Natalie would lose the use of her leg altogether. Natalie had treatment to stop the growth of the tumour, but then discovered she needed surgery to remove the tumour.

This surgery was vital for Natalie to regain use of her leg. Without this treatment she would be another young person with a disability and no family to support her, and she would lose out on the future she has been working towards as a pastry chef.

Frustratingly, the cost of the knee implants and supporting material items for the surgery are not covered by Bulgaria’s standard health insurance. A further £3,300 was needed to ensure that Natalie received the treatment she desperately needed.

Our partner organisation, FSCI Bulgaria, called on their friends and supporters in Bulgaria for financial assistance first and, after a determined social media campaign, they were delighted to tell Natalie that ALL of the funds had been raised and she would be able to have this life-altering surgery!

We are thrilled to say that Natalie was discharged from Orthopaedics in Gorna Banya on September 17, 2024 after a successful operation.

The tumour formation was removed and implants were put in place to help the bone gradually heal. We hope that the skilled medics and subsequent follow-up care will lead to a full recovery and return Natalie to her normal routine – continuing her professional development and getting back to work.

In recent days, the Bulgarian team have received more funds than needed for the surgery alone, but these will be used to help Natalie with post-operative care: stitches; regular inspection visits and help to cover the costs of transport as Natalie will be on crutches for the next two months.

Natalie will continue therapy with medication to prevent relapse in the Medical Oncology Department of UMBAL “St. Ivan Rilski”.

Houses of Opportunity are not simply residential shelters, they provide our residents with opportunities beyond just a job or further education; the support of friends and ‘family’ in times of crisis is incredibly powerful and something that our residents simply wouldn’t have access to if it wasn’t for House of Opportunity. FSCI Bulgaria are deeply grateful to all who donated to support Natalie in her hour of need and to ensure she can stay on the path to restoring dignity and reviving hope.
